Where chromates occur
Anywhere insulation runs hot against chromium-bearing metal, chromium (VI) can form. These are the settings where we are most often called in.
Combined heat and power (CHP) engines
CHP engines run hot for long periods, and their exhaust and insulation systems are prime sites for chromate formation on chromium-bearing components.
Power stations and turbine halls
High-temperature steam and gas plant, with extensive insulated pipework and casings, creates the sustained heat that drives chromium migration.
Gas and steam turbines
Turbine casings and hot-gas paths reach the temperatures at which chromium in steel oxidises into chromate within the surrounding insulation.
Standby and emergency generators
Generators that run intermittently at high load still reach the temperatures needed to form chromates around exhaust and manifold insulation.
Manufacturing process heat and furnaces
Furnaces, kilns and process-heat equipment expose chromium-bearing steel to prolonged high temperatures — a classic setting for hidden chromate.
Biogas plants
CHP units and process heat in biogas plants combine high temperatures with frequent maintenance access, raising the risk of disturbing chromate-bearing dust.
